Disasters and Emergency Appeals

Red Cross actively responds to disasters and conflicts abroad and at home. One of the most immediate ways that you can help victims of any emergency or people in need is by supporting an appeal.

The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is a lead player in responding to disasters wherever they occur around the globe. The Australian Red Cross, through its links with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (Federation), plays a major role in that response.

How your donation to an international appeal is spent

Appeal donations are used in one or more of the following ways:

  • to fund deployment of specialist aid workers. More...
  • to support Red Cross programs in the affected area. More...
  • to support the work of our Red Cross Red Crescent partners in the
    affected country. More...

Australian Red Cross will not deduct more than 10% of any donation for an international appeal to cover its own costs. The rest of the donation goes to provide assistance to the victims. Should the funds raised exceed the amount required to meet the immediate and longer-term needs of the people in the affected areas, Australian Red Cross will use any excess funds to help people affected by emergencies within the same region of the world. All donations over $2 are tax deductible.
  • Donations of relief goods, medical

Australian Red Cross does not accept donations of 'goods in-kind' for the following reasons:

    • the logistics of transporting and distrbuting 'in-kind' donations can often be very expensive a well as time consuming, in particular organisng clearances to foreign countries and arranging transportation to remote areas.

    • responding to the assessed needs of the affected population is our priority. 'In-kind' donations are frequently not based on identified needs and may be inappropriate for cultural or religious requirements of the affected population.

Australian Red Cross believes that essential relief items should be purchased locally where possible, to ensure appropriateness of the goods for the local population and to assist the local economy.
