Justice David Harper made a Member of the Order of Australia

Justice David Harper, Chairperson of the Red Cross International Humanitarian Law Advisory Committee in Victoria, was on the Queens' Birthday this year made a Member of the Order of Australia.

He was recognised for service to law reform, to the judiciary, and in the area of international humanitarian law, and to the community through support services for the care and resettlement of offenders and their families.

In his eight years of work with Red Cross, Justice Harper and the International Humanitarian Law Advisory Committee have used their connections and legal knowledge to creatively educate people around the country in this important area of law.

Justice David Harper and the International Humanitarian Law Advisory Committee have used their connections and legal knowledge to creatively educate people on International Humanitarian Law.

One of the most popular strategies developed by the Committee was a mock trial held at the Supreme Court, where Blue Heelers actor John Wood played a defendant accused of opening fire on civilians in a refugee camp. The trial was a gripping demonstration that highlighted the judicial processes of the International Criminal Court.

Red Cross is very fortunate to have Justice Harper's commitment and generosity of time and spirit in helping further the public's knowledge and understanding of International Humanitarian Law and we congratulate him on this well deserved honour.
